Nestled in the serene beauty of California State Parks, the Artist in Residence program at Pond Farm recently hosted an event that connected nature with artistry. Featuring the talented Sue Ellen McCann, the workshop provided a comprehensive introduction to the ancient craft of natural dyeing, a practice that has colored the fabric of human creativity for thousands of years.

Sue Ellen McCann guided participants through the process of gathering and harvesting dye plants, preparing fibers, creating dye baths, dyeing the fibers, and shared tips on how to modify colors, bringing a modern twist to this timeless art form.

The event was more than just a workshop; it was an immersive experience that fostered a deep connection between the participants and the natural world. Hosting this free event in a California State Park made it accessible for individuals curious about natural dyes but had not found the opportunity to explore. The natural surroundings provided a perfect backdrop for learning, inspiration, and creativity. An intimate group of 16 participants allowed for detailed demonstrations, space to ask questions, and for participants to engage with both the material and McCann. Feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive! One participant noted McCann “was very knowledgeable, extremely organized and had water/dyes already heating…and had samples of lots of different fibers and colors.”
