Celebrating a Vibrant Growing Together Day at Candlestick Point

Growing Together Day at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area took place along nearly a third of a mile of the park – occupying more space than any event in recent history! The atmosphere was vibrant with excitement and community spirit, making it a day to remember for everyone involved.

Participants were welcomed into Plover Field from the parking lot, where they were greeted by the friendly faces of California State Parks staff and the animal ambassadors from Tree Frog Treks. This welcome set the tone for a day filled with engaging and diverse activities. After entering, attendees received a map highlighting all the activities throughout the park. The first stop was Parks California’s table, overflowing with colorful kite decorating supplies.

Visitors could choose from a variety of engaging activities:

  • Smoothie Bike: Participants could hop on a stationary bike to blend their own smoothie, combining exercise with a tasty reward.
  • Succulent Planting: A chance to plant and take home a tiny succulent, adding a touch of greenery to their lives.
  • Wind Energy Education: Learning about the power of wind energy through fun, informative displays.
  • Sensory Walks: Guided walks that heightened awareness of the natural surroundings, offering a deeper connection to the environment.

DJ BeatsMe provided a lively soundtrack of family-friendly tunes, enhancing the festive atmosphere as attendees flew their newly decorated kites. The colorful kites dotted the sky, leading people further down the field to a large mural painting by Joe Colmenares, where the public was welcomed to assist him in painting.

One of the most popular stations was at the pier, where Literacy for Environmental Justice offered fishing workshops. This hands-on experience allowed participants to try their hand at fishing, guided by knowledgeable instructors. This event brought communities, friends, and families together, with food provided by Parks California to ensure everyone had the energy to fully enjoy the day.
